BAGHDAD, Oct 4, 2006 (AFP) - A suicide car bomber attacked a police station
in the central Iraqi city of Ramadi on Wednesday, but police prevented him
from reaching their gate and the blast only wounded four police and one US
soldier.

US military spokeswoman Major Megan McClung of the 1st Armored Division in
Ramadi said the bomber had targeted the Iraqi police station in west
Ramadi, a city in the grip of a violent rebellion against Iraq's US-backed
government.

"As a result of the Iraqi police actions, the SVBIED (suicide vehicle-borne
improvised explosive device) detonated at the checkpoint short of the Iraqi
police station," she said.

Four police and a coalition soldier were slightly wounded in the blast but
have been able to return to duty, she said.
