Baghdad--A parliamentary committee is drafting a bill that would ban imports of toy guns and fireworks into Iraq, hoping to curb increasingly aggressive behavior among children who have grown up amid real war, a lawmaker said Tuesday.
"The culture of violence has prevailed in our society and controlled the Iraqi family, and that has affected the culture of children," said Samira al-Moussawi, head of parliament's committee on children and women, which is preparing the proposed ban.
She said the draft legislation, likely to be presented to parliament today, would provide a fine of about $2,500 or at least three years in prison for importing toy guns and fireworks.
"All toys that cause terror among children by making explosion-like sound such as fireworks and those that affect the children's behavior such as guns will be covered," she said.
Iraq has no law forbidding ownership of real guns, and it was legal even during Saddam Hussein's dictatorship. Since the U.S.-led invasion, the rule has been that every household is permitted to have one firearm for self-defense, and nearly every family owns some sort of gun.

The kids, being kids will just use pieces of wood, nothing will be gained.

I can see only one benefit. Troops will not have to differentiate whether that person they saw, was carrying a toy or a real firearm.
