Gavel to gavel, the two days of congressional testimony from Army Gen. David H. Petraeus and Ambassador Ryan C. Crocker lasted a total of about 16 hours.
That includes the four separate readings of their combined 21 pages of testimony, and at least an hour of kudos bestowed on the duo by lawmakers who fondly recalled congressional delegations to Iraq or expressed their appreciation for their service in general.
It's an impressive tally of hours logged this week, and the hearings haven't ended.
Crocker is set to discuss U.S. policy and programs in Iraq at a House Appropriations subcommittee hearing today.
Also this morning, the Senate Foreign Relations Committee is set to hear from David Satterfield, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice's chief adviser on Iraq, and others on negotiating a long-term relationship with Iraq.
This afternoon, the Senate Armed Services Committee will hear from Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates and Adm. Michael Mullen, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. The hearing is to include discussion of the Iraqi government's progress in meeting benchmarks, the future U.S. military presence in Iraq and the situation in Afghanistan.
The Armed Services Committee, which was the first stop for Petraeus and Crocker on Tuesday, also heard yesterday about progress in Iraq from three outside experts:
Andrew J. Bacevich, a Boston University professor who was an Army officer in the Vietnam War and whose son was killed in Iraq; retired Army Gen. John M. Keane; and Robert Malley of the International Crisis Group.
