Indy jets brush past balcony set

RACE spectators were treated to a spectacular display yesterday as the military lit up the Gold Coast skyline with its best aircraft.
The F-111s, Red Berets, Tiger and Black Hawk helicopters dipped, spun and soared through the Indy precinct in preparation for the main air display today.
People on balconies of high rises waved to the pilot of the Black Hawk as he flew close enough to give them a haircut.
There were gasps as the aircraft flew between apartments, narrowly skirting balcony edges.

Donna Coiro from Brisbane had a bird's-eye view of the display as she stood on the roof of her apartment complex.
"The show was absolutely fantastic," she said.
"This is my fourth Indy and I always come down for it," she said. "It's one of the few times of the year everyone takes off work and has heaps of fun."
Despite the fine weather, there was still a cloud hanging over the future of the event.
David De Paoli had been to the first three Indys and returned this year knowing it could be one of his last.
"The air show today has been unbelievable -- the Gold Coast has got to keep the Indy," he said.
"It's an iconic race in an iconic spot, they go hand in hand."
The Red Berets took to the skies after the Tiger helicopters, with parachutists streaming red smoke through the air before landing on the beach.
It was a bittersweet day for the Royal Australian Air Force as they sent the F-111s up for the second last time in Indy history.
The craft will be retired this year in favour of Super Hornet F-18s. Their final flight is today.
"It's a bit sad to see them go. We've had them for 40 years," said Flight Lieutenant Ben Cartwright.
the Air Force looked forward to coming to Indy each year.
