Anyways, a lot of cultures put a very strong emphasis on marrying into the same culture. India is heavily divided by many ethnic groups; there are like 30+ main languages. The son might have wanted to marry someone from another ethnicity that was a historical enemy. (sounds like Romeo and Juliet)
 
Terribly sorry...It's just unheard of... Honestly...I'd like to see you give me sources for a white man marrying a black woman and being chained up for 3 weeks for doing it. Now, thats not to say it wasnt a widely accepted decision...Most of the time it's not...But still...The father doesnt chain up the son for it....Therefore, its crazy.
 
Well, to use your example, just 100 years ago people in interracial relations in the Southern US could be lynched by an angry mob, so this isn't that far fetched even for us Americans.
