What is the specific role of the MARCOS in infiltrating an area like kashmir. The terrain is definitely different.Or are their roles involved with the coastal and inland waterways.Wouldn't it be wise to use other special forces in such operations? I ask out of complete ignorance to the subject of infiltrating and am completely unknown to the ways of our force's tactics and techniques.Could you shed some light on the query raised.

MARCOS (Marine Commandos) is currently active in Jammu & Kashmir as part of the army's counter-terrorist efforts.......Their main task is to control the infiltration of terrorists from Pakistan to Jammu & Kashmir through Jhelum River and Wullar ... a 65 sq. km freshwater lake.........They patrol stopping any arms supplies and fresh militants who are crossing over.

MARCOS traning Includes but is not Limited to use different types of weapons, conduct special warfare techniques and how to gather intelligence from the enemy. MARCOS are trained to operate variety of environments such as beach, coastal, riverine and jungle......... This is exactly the Place Suited for their kind of operations.

They already have beards and wearing the Kashmiri suit they might pass off for a Kashmiri local..... and strike Quickely without being detected.

India's Marine Commando Force, also called MARCOS or MCF, is an elite naval special warfare unit similar to the US Navy SEALs, the Royal Marines SBS and Israel's S-13. It was raised to handle reconnaissance, raids and CounterTerrorism in a maritime environment.

This unit has gained a fearsome reputation among terrorists in the Northern state of Kashmir. The are variously referred to by nervous terrorists as "bearded army" since only MCF personnel are allowed to grow them, "water hens" for the speed in which they assault from the water and "crocodiles" for their amphibious capability.

It is an older picture. The standard weapon is currently the INSAS rifle, and soon to be the TAR-21 Tavor, when they are inducted this year.

People living in the remote areas of Ladakh region do not have access to medical facilities. The Army, deployed in this area, conducted a number of medical camps under operation Sadbhavana last year:

^ Indian Army launched operation Sahyog, a welfare programme to provide succour to the people in the remote areas who have been ravaged by insurgent activities in Assam. One of the activities under the operation is taking children on excursions to historical and heritage sites in various parts of the country. These tours have received a huge response from children.

The Lebanon-Israel border witnessed some disturbances on January 9 last when Hizbullah attacked an Israeli patrol in the disputed Shebaa farms. Shebaa farms is an area under dispute between the two countries and is located close to Blue Line, the border of Lebanon and Israel. the incident resulted in death of an Israel Defence Force (IDF) officer and critical injuries to three others. The IDF carried out an immediate retaliation with artillery and mortar shelling and air raids on Lebanese side of Blu Line.

An Observer Group Lebanon (OGL) patrol team patrol, that had gone to Bastra farm area for observation from Lebanese side of Blue Line, got trapped in firing, resulting in killing of a French officer, Maj Jean-Louis Valet and wounding of his Swedish colleague. the observer group patrol team was missing thereafter:

^ Fifteen Assam (INDBATT VII), which has been deployed in Lebanon as part of United Nations Interim Force In Lebanon (UNIFIL) since December last year was tasked to trace the OGL patrol, Maj KK Bhatacharya along with this Quick Reaction Team (QRT) moved to Bastra farm, when the shelling from IDF side was still in progress. Unmindful of the dangers involved and with firm desire to fulfill the missio on hand, the officer reached Bastra farm travelling 10-12 kms and extricated the OGL patrol members to safety. Col T Sambaiah, Commanding Officer himself brought the medical team to ensure timely evacuation of other casualties.

^ A multi-discipline Desert Safari which commenced at Sam village, Jaisalmer was flagged-in by Brig PM Mathew at Gandhinagar. The team comprising a JCO and 10 Other Ranks was led by Capt Sandeep Yadav of 14 Mahar.

The safari covered a distance of 800 kms through Rajasthan and Gujarat on camels and bicycles over a period of 14 days. The aim of the safari was to inculcate a spirit of adventure and boost the image of Indian Army in border areas. The team interacted with civilians, ex-servicemen and war-widows enroute.
