India : World Failing on Nuke Proliferation

NEW DELHI - India on Monday accused the world's leading nuclear powers of failing to prevent the spread of atomic weapons and demanded they tighten global nonproliferation rules.



External Affairs Minister Natwar Singh said the leading powers must also agree to "irreversible and verifiable cuts in their nuclear arsenal" if they want to be serious about nonproliferation.

Singh's comments came ahead of an international conference on the 1968 Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty, scheduled to be held in New York in May.

India, which became a nuclear power in 1998, has not signed the treaty because it says the pact seeks to restrict nuclear weapons to a few countries rather than eliminate them completely. Still, Singh said, India's conduct has always been consistent with the key provisions.

Singh also said some of the nuclear weapon states "have been active collaborators in, or silent spectators to, continuing clandestine and illegal proliferation, including export, of nuclear weapon components and technologies."

He didn't name the countries, but New Delhi has long accused the United States of overlooking Indian archrival Pakistan's involvement in the nuclear programs of countries like Iran (news - web sites) and North Korea (news - web sites).

Abdul Qadeer Khan, the father of Pakistan's nuclear program, is being investigated for allegedly exporting nuclear technology.

Pakistan, which became a nuclear power the same year as India, denies it had any knowledge of Khan's actions, and remains a key ally of the United States in its fight against terrorism.

Singh accused nuclear weapon states of a discriminatory approach to enforcing the treaty.

"Even today we see the same inconsistencies, with selective focus on the recipients of such clandestine proliferation but not enough attention on the sources of supply," he said.

He criticized the United States and Russia for refusing to cut their nuclear stockpiles even after the end of the Cold War.

"Such an attitude feeds and strengthens the belief that nuclear weapons are a currency of power," he said.

Singh said New Delhi would be willing to join global nonproliferation efforts if all nuclear weapon states cut their arsenals, lower the alert status of their strategic weapons, and boost cooperation in nuclear technologies for economic development, especially in the energy sector.

The treaty recognizes only five nuclear weapon states — the United States, Russia, Britain, France and China. The treaty, which has been signed by 185 countries, doesn't recognize India, Pakistan, Israel or North Korea as nuclear weapon states.

who is to say that the nuclear weapon wielding nations are to be the regulators of the nuclear weapons. perhaps that responsiblity of the enforcement should fall apon the... gasp dare i say... the UN. a nice UN resolution stating that any country that does not currently have sufficient advances in nuclear processing, then that country may not continue nor begin a a nuclear research program.
 
India saying this? I find that hyprocritical seeing how they were one of the first 3rd world countries seeking nuclear weapons. It's like that women at starbucks who sued over burning her tongue on hot coffee. It's like they're blaming the rest of the world for problems they chose to create. What kind of message does obtaining nuclear weapons in a place like India send to the rest of the developing nations of the world, it's just as much their fault.
 
MY solution is to replace the warheads with trash and launching the hundres of thousands of ICBM's multiple countries have into space. once their clear of Earths gravity then no problem.
 
and all the scientists and literature with them?

We should kill everybody who has over a 100 IQ too so no one is smart enough to build a nuclear weapon.

Excuse me? India first tested nukes in the late seventies, after China went nuclear and attacked India.

However, India did not weaponize for almost 25 years, until 1997. It singly has the best (non)proliferation record of nuclear technology or nuclear weapons platforms of all six other nuclear powers. During that time, it was the leader of the nuclear nonproliferation cause in the UN and speareheaded considerable efforts towards total de-weaponization of all nuclear states.

Fact is, foremost, Pakistan, China, Russia, have the worst record of nuclear tech proliferation and nuclear security. It is the responsibility of the nuclear powers to prevent nuclear weapons (not technology) proliferation by smaller nations. This is what India is talking about, and this is what the world has singularly failed to do.
 
But why would india arm itself with a handful of missiles if that was going to lead to pakistan doing the same? Wouldn't that make proloferation a greater threat that way?

But then it is america's fault is you look at it by who started and who followed.

Usa-russia-china-india-pakistan.

Maybe we should've just invaded japan and gotten it over with, at least this whole proliferation thing wouldn't be an issue.

BTW i'm well aware that we saved lives by using the bombs on japan, but in retrospect may have been a bad idea. At least from a MAD point of view.
 
exactly, chian had nukes only because soviet union threatened to bomb the most populous country in the world, and the us treatening to wipe manchuria and beijing off the map


india does not need nukes, neither does paki
