"KOLKATA: The Defence Secretary Shekhar Dutt formally launched the fourth follow-on Fast Attack Craft (FACs) ``Baratang'' on Saturday.

The craft is capable of intercepting fast moving surface vessels engaged in anti-national activities and search and rescue operations in coastal waters and economic zones.

Fitted with the latest weapons and navigation systems, the FACs are capable of mobilising a quick naval reaction.

Mr. Dutt hailed the efforts undertaken by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Limited, Kolkata, to manufacture state-of-the-art warships and said such indigenous manufacturing of defence materials was the need of the hour.

He acknowledged the need to provide more autonomy to the GRSE for such endeavours.

The cost of manufacturing the FAC was Rs. 50 crore and launched within 24 months."
