WHEN I WAS a young Navy nurse, a recruit with a severe injury was admitted to my hospital unit. I routinely prepared him for surgery and gave him a release form to complete. He anxiously questioned me several times about having to sign it, but I was emphatic that he must do so. Finally he complied.
Then I took another look at the form and realized why he had hesitated. It was a request for an autopsy!
