Hungary's Gripen fighter jets to come on line next week

By MTI

The Gripen fighter jets Hungary has purchased from Sweden will be deployable as of Monday, the commander of the Kecskemet military air base (C Hungary) told reporters on Thursday.
The 14 Gripen planes will be on stand-by service to patrol Hungary's air space together with the Russian Mig-29s and will undertake the tasks of the outgoing Russian fighter planes by the end of 2009, Istvan Peto said.
Hungarian Defense Minister Imre Szekeres will attend a ceremony of putting the Gripens into service at Kecskemet airbase on Monday.
Hungary took delivery of the Gripen fighter planes in 2006 and 2007 under a ten-year lease worth 210 billion forints (EUR 790mn).

Sounds like a good deal for Hungary. Not that there are any threats to Hungary's teritory in its immediate neighborhood, but those Gripens sure look great. :smil:
