The Navy's amphibious assault ship Boxer arrived Wednesday in Peru, the third and final stop on its two-month humanitarian assistance mission to Latin America.
During a scheduled six-day visit, military and civilian medical teams from the San Diego-based ship will work with doctors at a hospital in Huacho and set up a clinic at a school in Barranca, the Navy said. Construction battalions will make renovations at two schools.
Also, the Navy expects to take 25 patients aboard the Boxer for surgeries, including removal of cysts and gallbladders, and repair of hernias.
The ship is in South America as part of Continuing Promise '08, a program that provides medical and construction aid to Latin America. It left San Diego on April 28 and has stopped in Guatemala and El Salvador.
