Venezuela to Buy Russian-Made Planes

CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) — Venezuela plans on buying 12 Russian-built military planes, including Ilyushin-76 transport planes and Ilyushin-78 refueling aircraft, an air force official said Wednesday.
Under President Hugo Chavez, Venezuela has already purchased some $3 billion worth of arms from Russia, including 53 military helicopters, 100,000 Kalashnikov assault rifles and 24 SU-30 Sukhoi fighter jets.
Air Force Col. Oswaldo Hernandez Sanchez did not provide any details regarding the planes to be purchased from Russia, saying only that he expected them to arrive in Venezuela late next year.
Chavez — a former army lieutenant colonel — says Venezuela needs new transport planes to replace Hercules C-130 planes because of maintenance problems caused a U.S. ban on arms sales to the South American country.
The U.S. State Department imposed the ban, which affects the sale by other countries of any military hardware containing U.S. technology, citing a lack of support by Chavez's government for counterterrorism efforts and its increasingly close relations with Iran and communist-led Cuba.

Tankers

Now with tankers his little Flanker fleet can make happy flight to sunny little islands. Know any islands his Flankers might might want to visit?

The Gulf of Mexioc

Now that Chavez paid for an 800,000 barrel a year refinery for Nicaragua and one must assume he’s helping with money/fuel with Cuba, what if he expands? Imagine he purchase a squadron of Chinese/Russian jets for Nicaragua and one for Cuba? Make a little triangle in the Gulf of Mexico wouldn’t that be special? I wonder how my government and military would react if Chavez started flying his Flankers back and forth to Cuba? I wonder how many F-15 squadrons we have in the Gulf region. Another thing to think about wouldn’t Mexico start worrying a little and force them into the fast mover market? There was a rumor a few years back besides the Flankers there navy was interested in, yes the Mexican Navy not Mexican Air Force, another rumor started was that Mexico was interested in retired US Navy A/B/C/D Hornets?

They have opted for the F-18.

Peru

Pale Rider
Peru who are also investing quite a bit on European weapons systems.

What systems has Peru bought lately? A weak helicopter fleet, old Mig-29As bought in 1998, 3 working Mirage 2000-Ps?, T-54/55 the bulk of there armor, some BMP-1, ? Subs that can't go to sea?

I was able to find on a Russian site some helicopter repair contracts were signed and carried out.

Venezuela can't project power yet what I was saying was what if two or three other countries he's supporting kind of link up. Sometimes we look to far and don't pay enough attention to things closer to our shores I guess I'm saying. Sometimes giving a chance to grow bad things are difficult to get out.

I know that they have recently purchased a nice tidy batch of F-16s from the Belgian airforce, they are looking at PZH2000 SPH from the same country also, another recent purchase came in the form of LEO2A4 tanks from Germany with the possibility of purchasing Marder 1A5 also. Europe is the place to go for great bargain deals on weapons systems with the drastic military drawdowns that are happening.

Wrong country

Pale Rider you mixed up South American countries that was Chile who bought those nice goodies. Google Chile you'll see a lot nice weapons bought in the last five year including naval as well. Chile has I guess by now close to 400 tanks Leo 1 and IIs, pretty desent armed forces for such a thin country. You right about the Ex-Holland Vipers too I think 18 A/B upgraded Falcons to add to the ten Block-52 bought from United States with Israeli gear/systems inside. There F-5III are advance too and even have a bunch of slightly upgraded Holland Mirage 50s. The Mirages have been rumored for to sale to Colombia and/or Ecuador, to date nothing moved. They might be in storage already too to cut cost. I've read in the past US pilots saying only good things about Chile's AF.

Oh Crap! you are correct, sorry for the mix up, it will start getting real interesting in this part of the world with leaders like Chavez and his Socialist call. I anticapate that we will see a major build up of arms from each country.
