How many of us had parents or grandparents etc. in the Military?

My paternal grandfather emigrated to the USA in 1911.
When America entered WWI, he served with the US Army in France.
After the war, he returned to Italy.
I've been trying to trace his military service records, but its been dificult to say the least.
His oldest son, my uncle, was in North Africa with the Bersaglieri.
Despite trying to avoid front line service, he ended up as a company runner and while running for cover(!) got caught and made a POW by an Australian unit, who when they found out what a skilled leather worker he was, "forgot" to send him off to a POW centre.
The family lost track of him until he turned up after Italy's surrender.
My Mum's older brother was in the Alpini and was part of the Italian Facist Expeditionary Force that was sent to Russia.
He only survived because he got compassionate leave when his father died. Most of his unit was wiped out during a Russian counter offensive.

my grandfather fought in ww2 as a artillery man. amazing story i know, but i dont know any more then that.
