How to Get a Salute

MY FATHER wasn't keen on my joining the Air Force, and so I was apprehensive when he came to visit me on my first assignment. I had lent him my car for the day, and he was to pick me up from work later that afternoon. As Dad drove through the gate, the guard, spotting my car's decal identifying me as an officer, snapped to attention and saluted him. Apparently the guard mistook my father, fortyish with extra-short gray hair, for a senior officer. Dad got such a kick out of it that he swung around and turned into the base again for another salute.

Never again did I hear a negative word about the Air Force.
