How Close did China and America come to war?

In 2001 a Chinese Fighter Plane and an America Surveillance Plane collided over international waters. The Chinese pilot was killed instantly and the American Plane, an Aries II, was able to safely land at a Chinese airbase. During the following standoff I remember lots of talk about possible military action against China, many people were saying that we should send in Special Forces to destroy the plane and free the hostages, while these were a minority the numbers are still somewhat surprising to me. I also remember hearing that the US was ready to destroy the plane if we had any reason to suspect any tampering by the Chinese. Negotiations were tense but finally the hostages were released and China agreed to dismantle the plane and return it to America. (IMO they did this to categorize every single part so they could build their own.) So, how close do you think China and American came to an all out war? I don't think it was that close but the possibility seemed to be there and it was a real possibility. Would it have gone nuclear?

Well...

It would be a dumb reason for a war. Some of those politicians are psycholic bi*ches and can't wait to have war with China or anyone that is "Red". Fortunately, some had self-controls.

I would imagine the US would have done the same thing to hold hostage of any Chinese military personnel if a Chinese Spy plane or fighter jet is down in the vicinity of American soil.

i think you shouldnt use such in-direct discriminatory words to describe the airmen of that plane

they were treated like tourists, cant complain about that

give me an instance of any of those flyers complaining about chinese treatment

hostages are people held at gun point, please learn that :cen:

i'd like to take the middle ground and say the planes crew were captives....i'm sure they weren't allowed to stray far...

"The American crew made an emergency landing on China's Hainan Island. The crew members were taken to a hotel-like setting where they were well cared for, but not permitted to leave."

Tourists? That is how tourists are treated in China now adays, or at least back in 2001? They were not allowed to leave and the Chinese government used them as bargaining chips, sounds like hostages to me.

it would be idiotic to let them leave, first the situation has to be assessed and investigated before they can leave

bargaining chips??? what did china receieve???

I'd like to think that we wouldn't go to war over a aircraft collision, it was a plain flat out A/C mishap.
China and the USA going to war over that would have been stupid for both sides.

I did hear they took parts of it apart so they could build thier own though, however though they wouldn't have gone to war if it was back in the Cold War days they may have launched a few missiles at each other. However this isn't the cold war days so it would have been dumb to do anything. Also they were allowed to watch any movie they wanted too.

Reverse engineering is quite a common practice in any country in the world when one group suddenly is presented with access to previously 'forbidden' technology. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesnt. Given the standard operating procedure of the Chinese military when it comes to preventative maintenance it wouldn't be much of an advantage unless they further develop any copied systems.

As for how close they came to war we can only guess. There is no disclosure of secrets like this in either government. One of them simply 'claims' to be honest while the other is 'honest' about its level of control.

In reality the actions of the American flight crew were quite heroic. After being being hit by a chinese fighet aircraft that was harassing the plane over international air space. The crew stuggled to land the plane and useing anything possible destroyed as much advanced equipment as they could. The treatment of the prisonsers was quite good though. the prisoners were even given bibles to read.

I fail to see the heroism. The planes collided and they saved their asses. Then they followed protocol by the destruction of top secret elint equipment. They did their jobs nothing more, nothing less.

Agreed although I guess it depends on how badly damaged the aircraft was, the destruction of onboard equipment was nothing more than protocol as you stated.

The reason for the collision is actually because of a common practice by Chinese fighter pilots.

What they attempt to do is fly infront of the plane and then go to full afterburner. If done correctly you'll flash fry the crew and the plane will crash. The Chinese fighter plane however, accidently got too close while attempting to do this and the propellor went through the canopy of the Chinese fighter instantly killing the pilot.

And CSmaster, any attempt to blame the spy plane, which was in international waters, is downright ridiculous. There is no way, even if wanted to, that a propellor driven spy plane could ram a Chinese fighter that was aware of its presence and looking to avoid a collision.

i dont think u got the killing part right

he was still alive and ejected from the seat and his fellow pilot in another plane saw him in parachute down in the sea and called rescue ships

but sadly he was no where to found where the rescue teams search and search again...

and anybody knows wut the hell is in that plane and how far it can detect inland and intercept signals

and taht is why your government apologized later for the death of the pilot, who apparently had been chasing U.S spy plane away many times before already

True, the pilot did have a tendency of recklessly endangering both his life and the crew of the spy planes.

However, the pilot was instantly killed and the United States knew it at the time. They still offered to search however in order to help ease tensions with China.

This website, http://www.nucnews.net/nucnews/2001nn/0105nn/010505nn.htm, has the following qoute: "The collision damaged two of the surveillance plane's engines and one of its four propellers. It also caused the plane's nose cone to break off, and pieces of metal punctured parts of the fuselage."

Now, one propellor was damaged. This is consitent with a collision between the Chinese interceptor and the spy planes propellor. The other damage was largely fragmentary. Also the article says: "The American technicians who inspected the damaged Navy spy plane on China's Hainan island concluded it could be repaired and safely flown off the island, U.S. officials say"

This means that damage was not that extensive. Had the propellor gone through the metal skin of the fighter damage would have been far more extensive, resulting in almost the complete destruction of the engine in question as well as far more fragmentary damage likely destroying the other engine as well. Not to mention the additional risk of the propellor cutting into a fuel line or other part of the Chinese fighter resultin in an explosion. Had this been the case then the plane would not have been capable of flying out of China on its own without a complete replacement of both engines.

Hence, it is far more likely that the propellor sliced through the canopy instantly destroying the head of the Chinese pilot.

I believe those guys who flew that plane should of ditched the plane in the south China sea . Instead they flew it to a hostile Hainan Island and gave the Chinese an intelligence technology windfall . The best option for the US military would of been to courtmartial these clowns and execute them for gross dereliction of duty .

Ahhh...No

They did their Job, the Chi-Com pilot flew his bird like a idiot. And caused the accident. The Chi-Coms did treat our pilot alright. Though if they did treat them like trash I would've been completely behind sending in our boys in green to get them out. China is a threat to American Security. It's that simple. A communist state has stated that they would use nuclear wepaons against the USA if we defend Taiwan. So, is there going to be another cold war between the two powers. Yes. Is there going to be a hot war between the two powers. Maybe, we've already dumped heads before in a little place called Korea. So who knows. As I say, praise the lord and pass the ammunition.

Nuclear threat against US over Taiwan

China should use nuclear weapons against the United States if the American military intervenes in any conflict over Taiwan, according to a senior Chinese military official.

"If the Americans draw their missiles and position-guided ammunition on to the target zone on China's territory, I think we will have to respond with nuclear weapons," Major-General Zhu Chenghu, said at an official briefing.

General Zhu, considered a hawk, stressed his comments reflected his personal views and not official policy. Beijing has long insisted that it will not initiate the use of nuclear weapons in any conflict.

But in comments to a visiting delegation of correspondents based in Hong Kong, General Zhu said he believed the Chinese Government was under internal pressure to change its "no first use" policy and to make it clear that it would employ the most powerful weapons at its disposal to defend its claim over Taiwan.

"War logic" dictated that a weaker power needed to use maximum efforts to defeat a stronger rival, he said, speaking in fluent English. "We have no capability to fight a conventional war against the United States," General Zhu said. "We can't win this kind of war."

Whether or not the comments signal a shift in Chinese policy, they come at a sensitive time in relations between China and the US.

The Pentagon is preparing to release a long-delayed report on the Chinese military that some experts say will warn that China could emerge as a strategic rival to the US. National security concerns have also been a major issue in the $18.5 billion bid by CNOOC Ltd, a major Chinese oil and gas company, to purchase the Unocal Corporation, an American energy concern.

China has had nuclear bombs since 1964 and has a small arsenal of land and sea-based nuclear-tipped missiles that could reach the US, according to most Western intelligence estimates. Some Pentagon officials have argued that China has been expanding the size and sophistication of its nuclear weapons and delivery systems, while others argue Beijing has done little more than maintain a minimal deterrent against a nuclear attack.

Beijing has said repeatedly that it would use military force to prevent Taiwan from becoming a formally independent country. President George Bush has made it clear that the US would defend Taiwan.

Many military analysts have assumed that any battle over Taiwan would be localised, with both China and the US taking care to ensure that it did not expand into a general war between the two powers.

But the comments by General Zhu suggest at least some elements of the military are prepared to widen the conflict, perhaps to persuade the US it could no more successfully fight a limited war against China than it could against the former Soviet Union.

"If the Americans are determined to interfere, then we will be determined to respond," he said. "We Chinese will prepare ourselves for the destruction of all the cities east of Xian. Of course the Americans will have to be prepared that hundreds of cities will be destroyed by the Chinese."

General Zhu's threat is not the first of its kind from a senior Chinese military official. In 1995, Xiong Guangkai, who is now the deputy chief of the general staff of the People's Liberation Army, told Chas Freeman, a former Pentagon official, that China would consider using nuclear weapons in a Taiwan conflict. Mr Freeman quoted him as saying that Americans should worry more about Los Angeles than Taipei.

Foreign Ministry officials did not immediately respond to General Zhu's remarks.

But the general said he had recently expressed his views to former American officials, including Mr Freeman and Admiral Dennis Blair, the former commander in chief of the US Pacific Command.

China is prepared to use nuclear weapons against the US if it is attacked by Washington during a confrontation over Taiwan, a Chinese general said on Thursday.

“If the Americans draw their missiles and position-guided ammunition on to the target zone on China's territory, I think we will have to respond with nuclear weapons,” said General Zhu Chenghu.

Report: China sends nuke warning to U.S. over Taiwan

Thursday, July 14, 2005; Posted: 11:13 p.m. EDT (03:13 GMT)

BEIJING, China (Reuters) -- A senior Chinese general has warned that China was ready to use nuclear weapons against the United States if Washington attacked his country over Taiwan, the Financial Times newspaper reported on Friday.

Zhu Chenghu, a major general in the People's Liberation Army who said he was expressing his own views and did not anticipate a conflict with Washington, nevertheless said China would have no option but to go nuclear in the event of an attack.

"If the Americans draw their missiles and position-guided ammunition onto the target zone on China's territory, I think we will have to respond with nuclear weapons," he told an official briefing for international journalists.

A spokeswoman for China's Foreign Ministry noted that the general had said in the article he was not speaking on behalf of the government. A spokesman later said the ministry was looking into the matter.

The Defense Ministry declined to comment, saying the Foreign Ministry had organized the event at which the general spoke.

Beijing considers Taiwan part of China, and has vowed to bring the self-governed democracy back into the fold. In March, China's parliament passed an anti-secession law authorizing the use of "non-peaceful means" to do so.

Zhu said the threat to escalate a conflict might be the only way to stop one because China did not have the capability to fight a conventional war with the United States.

"If the Americans are determined to interfere ... we will be determined to respond," he said.

"We Chinese will prepare ourselves for the destruction of all of the cities east of Xian. Of course the Americans will have to be prepared that hundreds ... of cities will be destroyed by the Chinese," he added.

China first tested a nuclear bomb in 1964. It has declared a policy of not using such weapons unless it has already suffered nuclear attack.

The newspaper observed that it was unclear what prompted the remarks, but noted that they were the most specific by a senior Chinese official in nearly a decade.

During a visit to Beijing earlier this month U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said there should be no unilateral change in the status quo over the disputed island of Taiwan.

"That means that we don't support unilateral moves toward independence by Taiwan. It also means that we are concerned about the military balance, and we'll say to China that they should do nothing militarily to provoke Taiwan," she added.

So, you want to know where I got that little bit of Info. Red China's own Gerenal Zhu said that himself. So I think that the People's Republic of China is now on my list of nations sthat I don't trust. That And I think it is a illegal government due to the fact that Taiwan is still the legal government of the Republic of China in my opinion. Taiwan is it's own country, not a break away part of that RED China.
