LONDON, Dec 8 (AFP) - A British Hercules transport plane that crashed in
Iraq on January 30, killing 10 service personnel, was brought down by
"hostile ground-to-air fire", Defence Secretary John Reid said Thursday.
He told parliament that an inquiry has concluded that "the aircraft crashed
because it became uncontrollable after hostile ground-to-air fire caused the
outboard right-hand wing to explode and separate from the aircraft".
The crash of the Royal Air Force plane was the single biggest loss of life
for British forces in Iraq since the March 2003 US-led invasion which
overthrew Saddam Hussein's regime.
