Today and yesterday, in Italy we had two days of national mourning.
Six of our soldiers have been killed in Kabul.
I would like to honor them.
In their Funeral Mass in Rome, the Military Bishop who officiated said they are "Peace makers". That's true. We italians don't fear to speak to local populations, to help them, to collaborate with them. We know what "to be in war" means. We want peace, for us and for everyone. We want to help them build new democratic institutions.
But there is something I'd like to underline: today, Rome was full of Italian flags, full of people saluting the coffins, many many ex-soldiers wearing their old hats or uniforms.
It seemed to me we wanted to make the world see that we are proud of those six men, that we are proud of being Italian, that we are proud of our military forces engaged in their missions, at Home and abroad.
I'm proud of them.
Today has been a moment of National Unity.
It was the best way to honor these six soldiers:
Matteo Mureddu Davide Ricchiuto Massimiliano Randino
Roberto Valente Antonio Fortunato Giandomenico Pistonami
186th Reggimento Fanteria "Folgore"
