UN General Assembly president slams Honduras coup

29 Jun 2009, 0446 hrs IST, AFP

UNITED NATIONS: The president of the UN General Assembly, Miguel d'Escoto Brockmann, has strongly condemned the army coup that deposed President
Manuel Zelaya in Honduras.

D'Escoto "firmly and categorically condemns the criminal action by the army in the Republic of Honduras that has broken the constitutional order by carrying out a coup d'etat against President Manuel Zelaya," his office said in a statement yesterday.

The Nicaraguan former foreign minister demanded that "the Honduran army immediately end its illegal action" and called on US President Barack Obama to condemn the coup.

Pointing to the new policy toward Latin America, which Obama announced at a Summit of the Americas in Trinidad last month, D'Escoto said: "Many are now asking if this coup is part of this new policy as it is well known that the army in Honduras has a history of total collaboration with the United States."

"In order to eliminate any doubt, it is absolutely necessary that President Obama immediately condemns the coup against President Zelaya," he added.

"In any case, it should be clear that neither the United States nor any other country should recognize the legitimacy of another head of state in Honduras."

Both Obama and US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton issued statements on Honduras earlier in the day, with the US president saying he was "deeply concerned" by the news.

Really? The Honduran President was attempting to break the law and Honduras' checks and balances just kicked in. They just prevented another Hugo Chavez from taking power. Hopefully Honduras which has been a democracy since the early 80's will preserve that system instead of returning to military dictatorship.
But then again, what else do you expect from the UN?
But hell... this is one hell of a checks and balance system. If you try anything overly stupid, remember, the military has all the guns.

Obama was "meddling" in Honduras

But not Iran? Communist.

Obama meddles

By Jay Solomon, Of THE WALL STREET JOURNAL

The Obama administration worked in recent days to prevent President Manuel Zelaya's ouster, said a senior U.S. official. The State Department, in particular, communicated to Honduran officials on the ground that President Barack Obama wouldn't support any nondemocratic transfer of power in the Central American country.

"We had some indication that a move against Mr. Zelaya was afoot," said a U.S. official briefed on the diplomacy. "We made it clear it was something we didn't support."

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton joined Obama Sunday in criticizing the Honduran coup and calling for the restoration of the democratic process.

"We call on all parties in Honduras to respect the constitutional order and the rule of law, to reaffirm their democratic vocation, and to commit themselves to resolve political disputes peacefully and through dialogue," Clinton said in a statement.
The President is the BAD guy trying to usurp the proper processes. The soldiers were on the side of good and followed the mandates of the assembly and the supreme court.

For the liberal brethren here an example; President BUSH is trying to change the constitution to allow him to be president for life, the Congress and the Supreme Court declare his actions illegal and ask the Army to remove him from the White House. (cue screaming and gnashing of teeth)

Now replace BUSH with ZELAYA and you have the situation on the ground.

This was a good thing and is good for the rule of law in Honduras.

Manuel Zelaya is another Hugo Chavez.... he's trying to do the same bloody thing that Chavez and Castro have done....

Obama of course will support a fellow marxist but he won't support the people of Iran trying t over throw a unjust despotic government.

As for the UN..... of course they're against it.... Freedom is the last thing the UN wants. They want a socialist world so it's far easier to govern....

Honduras is another melting pot, basket case of a country...the last time I was there, the corrupted military and armed forces would participate in "organized crime" and what not.....To be honest, all of Latin America is corrupted and twisted...and no president or ally will ever be able to resolve such matters....sigh...Latin America is seen as diggin' out one "hole to cover another hole"..hahahaha...As far as Manuel Zelaya well he voted himself into office....hes a criminal and terrorist..of course that's my opinion...sigh..we'll just have to wait and see what happends....

On a happy note, I love Honduras cream cheese!!!! It taste the best with black beans and fresh made corn tortillas!!! LOL!!! yum.

Of course Nicaruaga is mad, of course Hugo is mad, I imagine Morales and Correa aren't all that happy. Nor is their hero Castro. This throws a monkey wrench in the great socialist plans they have.

POTUS needs to stay out of it as does the Sec State. He was attempting to circumvent Honduran law and got his butt handed to him. Unless POTUS truly does support the circumvention of laws ................

WASHINGTON (AP) - President Barack Obama says the weekend ouster of Honduran leader Manuel Zelaya was a "not legal" coup and that he remains the country's president.
Obama spoke to reporters in the Oval Office on Monday after meetings with Colombian President Alvaro Uribe. Obama said he wanted to be very clear that President Zelaya is the democratically elected president.

Obama pledged the U.S. to "stand on the side of democracy" and to work with other nations and international entities to resolve the matter peacefully.

The Resident is officially backing a Socialist who is breaking their own constitution...which shows me how he feels about the "law".

Here's the issue I have. This guys own congress was against his attempt to change their Constitution and circumvent their laws. How can POTUS in good faith support this clown? While he may have been democratically elected but it's his attempt to violate his country's constitution and his own attempt to use his country's military to "assist" in the "popular vote" that got him ousted.

Have we reached a point that our President is going to bow to the will of the UN and Socialist schemers in order to up his "the world loves me" stature?

The US should stay out of this, it's the legal process of Honduras at work.
As to how the leadership will sort itself in Honduras, we'll have to see.
The current President was democratically elected but that doesn't give him the right to break the law. Remember, even Hitler was democratically elected into power. Just because you got there legally doesn't mean you can stay there illegally.

That what both myself and 03USMC are saying.... I'm just pissed that my Commander and Chief is supporting that commie pinko and is basically saying that yeah..... Hitler was legally elected.... no problem. Let him stay in power.

Hard to argue with that. Imagine the German Army conducted a coup back in 1938.
Then they'd still be branded as criminals because the world wouldn't have known what Hitler was capable of.
