IN VIETNAM, "home" had a magical appeal. On the flight line at Lai Khe, we received engines and transmissions that had been packed in North Carolina and shipped in large, pressurized canisters. The opening of a can was a grand affair, and the company started to assemble an hour before. Those due to leave soon were in the front. With great care, the maintenance crew loosened the can's bolts. A roar from the crowd rose as the hiss of escaping air began. That whiff of stateside air was as welcome as any care package from home.
