A floating legend returns to New York Thursday, as the World War II-era aircraft carrier USS Intrepid docks at Pier 86 on Manhattan's West Side.
The decommissioned carrier, home since 1982 to the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum, comes back from two years of repairs and renovations in Bayonne, NJ.
In doing so, she resumes her service to the country she's defended, in one form or another, for more than six decades.
Intrepid, third in a series of then-state-of-the-art Essex-class aircraft carriers, was commissioned in August, 1943 - just in time to play a pivotal role in defeating the Japanese fleet in the Pacific.
Withstanding five kamikaze strikes, she remained on active duty for nearly three decades after the war.
Her present mission began in 1982, when Congress bequeathed her to the philanthropic Fisher family's Intrepid Museum Foundation, which converted her into the floating museum that New Yorkers are soon to enjoy again.
Intrepid's current mission, however, takes place far from the Hudson River.
She lends her name, for one, to the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund, an endeavor started by the Fisher family to provide assistance to the families of American servicemembers who fell in the line of duty.
To that end, the fund inspired the $55 million Center for the Intrepid at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Tex., which provides rehabilitation facilities for Iraq and Afghanistan veterans fighting severe combat injuries.
Its latest endeavor is the National Intrepid Center of Excellence in Bethesda, Md., which is meant to provide advanced diagnosis and treatment for combat vets with traumatic brain injuries - as well as continued research in the field.
In other words, just as Intrepid returns to tell once again of the heroism of those who fought aboard and alongside her, she ensures that the men and women who continue the fight receive the honor and support they deserve.
Which is entirely fitting.
