WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Virginia Tech's Branden Ore injured his left ankle in the first quarter against No. 14 Wake Forest on Saturday night, likely sidelining the Atlantic Coast Conference's leading rusher for the rest of the game.
Ore, who averages 109 yards rushing for the No. 19 Hokies, was hurt when he was tackled by Josh Gattis on a 7-yard run that was wiped out due to a penalty midway through the period. Ore's left leg folded awkwardly underneath him as he went down, and he was helped to the sideline where he pounded his fist on a table while being examined by team officials.
A few minutes later, Ore had an ice bag taped to his foot and a towel over his head while several teammates came by to speak to him. Officials said he would not return to the game, finishing with one carry for 5 yards.
