According to a U.S. Army report out of Iraq obtained by U.S. News, American troops, acting as advisers for Iraqi border guards, were recently surrounded and attacked by a larger unit of Iranian soldiers, well within the border of Iraq.
The report highlights the details: A platoon of Iranian soldiers on the Iraqi side of the border fired rocket-propelled grenades and used small arms against a joint patrol of U.S. and Iraqi soldiers east of Balad Ruz. Four Iraqi Army soldiers, one interpreter, and one Iraqi border policeman remain unaccounted for after the September incident in eastern Diyala, 75 miles east of Baghdad.
During a joint border patrol, both American and Iraqi soldiers saw two Iranian soldiers run from Iraq back across the Iranian border as they approached. The patrol then came upon a single Iranian soldier, on the Iraqi side of the border, who did not flee.
While the joint U.S.-Iraqi patrol was speaking with the soldier, according to the report, the patrol was "approached by a platoon-size element of Iranian soldiers." An Iranian border captain then told the U.S. and Iraqi soldiers that "if they tried to leave their location, the Iranians would fire upon them." During this conversation with the Iranian captain, Iranian forces began firing and continued when U.S. troops tried to withdraw.
Iraqi and American forces returned fire "to break contact and left the area to report the incident," the report noted. "The Iranian forces continued to fire indirect fire well into Iraq as Coalition Force soldiers withdrew; for reasons unknown at this time, the Iraqi Army forces remained behind."
This report makes Iran's version of the recent kidnapping of Royal sailors and Marines even more suspect.
And it's going to happen again.
It seems that U.S. troops have been told to fight, rather than surrender, says LtCdr Erik Horner.
Asked by The Independent whether the men under his command would have fired on the Iranians, he said: "Agreed. Yes. I don't want to second-guess the British after the fact but our rules of engagement allow a little more latitude. Our boarding team's training is a little bit more towards self-preservation."
The executive officer - second-in-command on USS Underwood, the frigate working in the British-controlled task force with HMS Cornwall - said: " The unique US Navy rules of engagement say we not only have a right to self-defence but also an obligation to self-defence. They [the British] had every right in my mind and every justification to defend themselves rather than allow themselves to be taken. Our reaction was, 'Why didn't your guys defend themselves?'"
His comments came as it was reported British intelligence had been warned by the CIA that Iran would seek revenge for the detention of five suspected Iranian intelligence officers in Iraq two months ago but refused to raise threat levels in line with their US counterparts. The capture of the eight sailors and seven marines - including one young mother - will undoubtedly renew accusations that Britain's determination to maintain a friendly face in the region has left its troops frequently under protected.
Pajamas Media reports that the U.S. is holding more than 300 Iranian prisoners, all of whom have been captured in Iraq in the last three months.

REMOVED!

Guys, this is it. Local news here is saying President Ahmadumbassjinadad has been shelved and that the Ayatolah Kakamamie and the Mullahs are calling the shots directly now. Iran is in the doorway, they have crossed the REMOVED! threshold and are in the doorway. They have some sort of delusions that need to be rectified post haste. Phoenix I'd tell yer family to keep their heads down.

mod edit: keep it clean and respectful my friend

Apparently this happened in September last year and obviously wasn't considered a big deal by US forces at the time as demonstrated by this comment from the USNEWS article.

It is possible that Iranians thought they were in Iranian territory, according to U.S. military officials. Such border confusions and disputes happen routinely.

It is possible I thought I was in my own yard when I was in fact in my neighbors yard. With GPS and whatnot it is hard to believe that anyone would misunderstand and fire in a direction they know is the territory of another country.

I want to know why the Iraqis remained behind. . .

I think Iranian units don't have GPS at all. But believe you're right. Americans had it and they knew where they were

IDF intelligence: Iran, Hizbullah preparing for possible US strike

Head of military intelligence says Iran, Syria and Hizbullah preparing for possible confrontation with US this summer

Iran, Syria and Hizbullah are preparing for a possible military confrontation with the United States in the summer, the head of the IDF's Military Intelligence said Sunday.

"Their preparation is defensive ahead of war … They fear a war initiated by the Americans because they understand that there might
be an attack against Iran over the summer, but not by Israel," Maj. Gen. Amos Yadlin told the Cabinet.

"We are closely following these preparations, for fear that one of the sides misinterprets certain moves in the region. I bring up the Six Day War in this context – when you reach a war no one is interested in as a result of the involvement of many players.

"We need to be ready, and at the same time be careful that such steps do not cause others to get the wrong idea about our moves," he added.

According to the intelligence chief, Hizbullah has been maintaining the ceasefire so far, because the organization is not interested in getting into another conflict with Israel. "The organization is busy rehabilitating… like the Syrians, Hizbullah too needs to prepare for a war in the summer."

Haniyeh: Divide and conquer ?
Turning his attention to Palestinian Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh, Yadlin said that the latter was seeking to separate between the moderate Hamas government and the more militant Hamas movement.

"When Haniyeh retuned from the Arab summit, he made some extreme statements and hinted that if the Hamas government is not recognized by the international community and the boycott not lifted – a third intifada may break out," Yadlin said.

However, Yadlin stated that there were elements within Hamas that were unhappy with the approval of the Arab initiative. "In the last month, he (Haniyeh) has been leading the move towards a unity government, and he is now being blamed for leading a moderate approach in the Riyadh summit," he explained.
