Hi,

I can't find a poem we used to have up in our orderly room, it's about an infantry soldier who goes to the pearly gates. I don't remember most of it but it finishes up

I used to serve in the Infantry Corps, I've done my time in hell.

It's not the Marine Cadence I've seen on the net but slightly different, I think there are 6-7 4 line stanzas.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Cheers

Welcome to the forums Andrew.

Is this the one you are looking for??

"And When He Gets To Heaven,
To Saint Peter He Will Tell;
One More Marine Reporting Sir,
I've Served My Time In Hell"
- Marine Grave inscription on Guadalcanal, 1942

Aye that poem was featured at the start scene of Medal of Honor: Frontline. I used it for one of my reports as the last thing. It was awesome. You just saw that and heard gunfire and screams and then everything went dim. It was an awesome ending. (I got an 100! Lol.)

Thanks for the replies guys. The poem ends like that, but it's longer about 6 stanzas. I've managed to dredge up the firt stanza from memory

Last night as I lay sleeping,
I died or so it seemed
And then I went to Heaven
But only in my dreams

It goes on about how he lead a bad life ect, and then St Peter looks at the last notation on the file and says you used to serve in the Infantry Corps, you've done your time in hell.

I saw it quite a bit in the Australian Army and our WO had it posted in the Orderly Room, but I can't find it anywhere on the internet, and I've been Googling for a couple of hours.

You can have your army Kakhis,
And your navy blues,
Here's a different sort of fighting man,
I'll introduce to you.

His uniform is unlike
Any you've ever seen;
And the Germans called him Devil Dog,
But his real name is Marine!

He was born on Parris Island (San Diego or the Hills of Quantico)
The land that God forgot.
The sand was 14 inches deep,
the sun was blazing hot.

He'd get up every morning,
Way before the sun,
And he'd run a hundred miles or more,
Before the day was done.

He fought in the cold of Korea,
In the heat of Viet Nam.
When ever our country goes to war,
The Marines are first to land.

We'll fight them on the ground,
We'll fight them in the sky,
When the Army and Navy are heading home,
The Marines are standing by.

And when he gets to heaven,
To St. Peter he will tell,
"Another Marine reporting, Sir,
I've served my time in Hell!"

I hope this is useful to you
