I read with interest the thread concerning the Anglo-Zulu war, and because of the insight and respect shown in the comments is why I'm here. I'm researching Private John Smith from Wigan (yes it's his real name ... at least at this point in his life) 25B/1005 B Coy 2nd Battn 24th Regiment. He fought at Rourke's Drift, in the River War against the Madhi and was a sniper in WWI (before being punished with kitchen for lying about his age). Between times he mined gold in the US (unsucessfully) worked on the railroad and ran a bar in Canada. He ended his days (in his eighties as mason in Yorkshire.
