We had advanced up to learning the art of throwing a hand grenade. And our instructor was doing what instructors do...instructing us on how to deal with the Norwegian army's standard shock hand grenade.
He took one of the carton boxes out of the crate, and said:
"This is a hand grenade. It is not dangerous."
He then showed us how to carefully shake the grenade out of it's protective carton box, so that the safety arm would end up inside the palm of his hand, and repeated:
"This is a hand grenade, it is NOT dangerous"
Then he showed us how to pull the safety pin, and did so:
This is a hand grenade, it is STILL NOT dangerous!"
He then lobbed the grenade, and yelled:
NOW it's dangerous, HIT THE DIRT!
As we lay there in the wet, cold mud, of an october training range, waiting for the bang...a small "piff" came from the grenade...it was a training grenade...
