BAGHDAD, Iraq_In a daring move, gunmen overran an Iraqi military checkpoint
in east Baghdad early on Monday and kidnapped 11 soldiers, police said.

The gunmen arrived at the Sadr City checkpoint in a minivan and a car at 7
a.m. (0400 GMT), Lt. Thaer Mahmoud of the police said. They seized all the
soldiers on duty and made off.

Mahmoud said he had no further details but it did not appear that anybody
was shot in the incident.

It was not clear who kidnapped the soldiers, but Sadr City is a stronghold
of the Mahdi Army militia of radical Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr.

The incident came a day after the U.S.-led coalition said it had killed 30
Mahdi Army fighters in a battle in the predominantly Shiite city of
Diwaniyah in southern Iraq.
