If you want a basic understanding of the Guadalcanal campaign from the eyes of the Marines who served there I recommend this book. Keep in mind it was written and published during the Second World War so it is slanted towards the American point of view.

The author was a Civilian Correspondant who landed with the 1st Marine Division 07 August 1942.
