THE U.S. MILITARY not only accepts and appreciates support from the public during a time of war — it helps you give it.
America Supports You, which maintains one of the most comprehensive databases of ways to send messages and care packages to the troops, was compiled by the Defense Department in 2004.
Since then, the organizations listed on theWeb site have given more than $6 million in direct financial donations to soldiers and their families, handed out more than 14,000 free airline tickets to wounded troops, built dozens of homes for veterans, and distributed thousands of free computers and nearly a million books.
More than 4 million care packages were sent, and 600,000 troops were greeted by citizens as they landed at a U.S. airport after serving in Iraq or Afghanistan.
The site, www.americasupportsyou.mil, has connected nearly 2 million service members with organizations that support soldiers and their families.
Billed as a “one-stop location for our military and their families to find hundreds of support organizations eager to help our heroes when they need it most,” the site does not accept direct donations. Instead it points people to nearly 400 organizations across the country that do.
But it will accept e-mail messages of thanks that the department sends directly to its soldiers.
The site also has a link called Kids Take Action that suggests ways for children and classrooms to get involved.
