During WWII the Europeans could not coherently fight against the Japanese because they had Nazi Germany to deal with. That's why the US took on the brunt of Allied fighting against the Japanese. Systematically taking out their Navy, capturing island after island, and bombing the bejesus out of them.

I can't fathom any Asian country that was occupied by the Japanese seeing them as heroes. Their treatment of the local populations was atrocious from Indochina to Korea. The rape of Nanking comes to mind. So does the enslavement of Korean men as laborers and use of Korean women as sex slaves. Not heroic in my eyes at all.
