Gorshkov

Hi,

Yup it started with a $974 MIllion deal now Russia wants $2.9 Billion , that too with a 5 years delay . After the recent public outburst by indina Defence minister in a public meeting whic had russion diplomats , Russia seems to be considering doing a re- evaluation the prices of current deals Including T-90 and SU 30 MKI 's

the really bizarre thing here is that India plans to start building its own carriers soon; rumours suggest that they will be bigger than what China intends to build but whether that means as big as an American Fleet Carrier is another matter. so why not just tell the Russians to stick their carrier and just add one to the projected build schedule? it's not like they don't already have carriers to practice doctrine and the like.
or is it just to keep the Gorshkov out of Chinese hands now?

Hi bren122,

Indian Navy War Doctrine revolves around having 3 Aircraft carriers for each command . India doesn't wants to own and maintain Super Carriers like US has , we don't have the will or money to do that . mostly 40,000-tonne warships are what we are looking for.

We used to have 2 Carrier fleet and intended to own at least 3 functional carrers by 2012 , when Vikrant was decommissioned in 1997 we were left with only one aircraft carrier which is also nearing it's serviciable life. so we need at least 2 carrers at the same time.

And the work on indeginous carrier started long ago we called them air defense ship . it a 37,500-tonne warship and is being built at Cochin Shipyard Limited at Kochi in Kerala.

Peace

so why not just add an extra hull or two? at $3billion the Gorshkov is going to be an expensive buy for an old hull.
isn't the Indian Navy composed of a Western and Eastern command (one facing Pakistan and one facing China)? that would make 6 hulls wouldn't it?
how does a 40thousand tonne class match the Indian government's intention to match the new Chinese carriers at a projected 50 thousand tonnes? or was that matching hull numbers without regard to tonnage?

the Vikrant is variously reported here as being part of a reserve fleet or awaiting sale- could you clarify its status for me?

Hi bren122,

Indian Navy has 2 Commands Western and Eastern , so we need two carriers for the two and as we have seen these monsters require long refills as well , so we need one reserve so that 2 carriers are operational at any point . If one goes for a refill at least two are operational . 1965 War Vikrant was in under refit similarly at most time when you need them the most the seem to be in refil ;)

Aircraft carrier INS Vikrant formerly HMS Hercules was a Majestic-class light aircraft carrier of the Indian Navy. India bought the carrer in January 1957 . which was de-commissioned in 1997 has been turned into a museum near the cost of Mumbai.

Haven't seen them 50 K Tonn Chinese Carriers yet keep hearing about them elusive carrers since last 5 to 11 years ;) .

I only know of two carriers China have or is planning to buy one is the Varyag aircraft carrier that was purchased from Ukraine as scrap for $20 million in 1998 other is a a refurbished Soviet-era Kiev class carrier which it's supposed to get by 2012 ( we know Russion arms deals dosen't always finish on time ).
