Georgia demanded that Russia withdraw additional peacekeeping troops and a unit of the Russian Army railway force that had been sent recently to Georgia’s breakaway region of Abkhazia. Ekaterine Tkeshelashvili, Georgia’s foreign minister, told reporters that the deployments amounted to “foreign military intervention.” Georgian officials said the railroad troops and hundreds of additional Russian peacekeepers were deployed in violation of cease-fire accords. Russian officials said they had sent the railway unit to repair infrastructure in the region.
