The de facto government of Abkhazia, a separatist region receiving Russian support, claimed to have shot down two of Georgia’s remotely piloted aerial reconnaissance planes in a day. The Abkhaz military said it had brought down seven drones since April 20, when a Georgian drone made a video recording of its own destruction by what appeared to be a Russian fighter jet firing an air-to-air missile. Georgia has said the Abkhaz claims of an antiaircraft ability are deceptions intended to divert attention from Russia’s role in the April attack. “There is a spectacle every day,” said Shota Utiashvili, of the Georgian Interior Ministry. “They start shooting in the sky. Then they show pieces of aircraft and say they shot something down.”
