He’s a ragin’ Cagun and John Wayne rolled into one. Lieutenant-General Russel Honore hit the ground running-and cussing-in New Orleans, where the cigar-chomping Louisiana native has injected life into rescue efforts.
“Put those gooddam weapons down!” he yelled to camouflaged troops rolling in on trucks. Despite a desperate call for order amid violence and looting, General Honore was careful to show he was leading a humanitarian relief operation. He told everyone to point their guns downward, reminding them they were “not in Iraq”.
So far, General Honore has one over the harshest critics, including New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin, who has blasted the federal response. “He came of the dog-gone chopper and he started cussing and people started moving”, Mr Nagin told a radio station. “I give the President some credit on this: he sent one John Wayne dude down here that can get some stuff done”.
