Sen. John McCain yesterday slammed retired Gen. Ricardo Sanchez, the former top commander in Iraq, who late last week said a failure of leadership had led to a "nightmare."
"I had meetings that Gen. Sanchez was present where he advocated the strategy that he now is so critical of," said McCain (R-Ariz.) on ABC's "This Week." "I wish that he had given us the benefit of that knowledge at the time," added the presidential hopeful.
Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) said he was "astounded" by [Sanchez's] comments, saying on CNN, "I appreciate his service, but Abu Ghraib got out of control under his watch, the war in general got out of control under his watch."
Sanchez last week called the war "a nightmare with no end in sight" and predicted American troops would be in Iraq "for the foreseeable future."
Sanchez called the current troop surge strategy in Iraq a "desperate attempt by an administration that has not accepted the political and economic realities of this war."
