CORONADO — Navy Secretary Donald Winter has announced plans to name the fourth Littoral Combat Ship after the city of Coronado.
The Navy's presence in Coronado dates to 1917, when North Island Naval Air Station was established there. Coronado Naval Base – home to the Naval Special Warfare and Naval Surface Forces commands, among others – also is located in the city.
The littoral ship Coronado will be the third Navy vessel to bear the city's name. The first, a patrol frigate, earned four battle stars during World War II. The second, decommissioned in 2006, was the flagship for the San Diego-based 3rd Fleet.
Navy officials have said they plan to order 55 littoral ships, which are designed to perform mine-warfare and anti-submarine operations in coastal waters.
General Dynamics and Lockheed Martin are competing to build the vessels.
The Navy anticipates building the third Littoral Combat Ship, the Fort Worth, and the Coronado starting this year, said Lt. Clay Doss, a Navy spokesman.
