French pool bars Muslim woman for 'burquini' suit (AP)

No the crosses and yamulkes were not mentioned because it was not an issue. It was only an issue with muslims because they (certain large factions) seem to believe all cultures must change to suit them or else its predjudice.

I for one am sick of their demands as far as I'm concerned France has it right. Get with it or get out.

That's just it, YES THEY DO.

The difference is that Christians and Jews have been living in France a very long time and both have basically accepted and agreed with France's secularism. This is why the Vatican gets so angry with the French, because French Catholics don't march to the same tune as the Vatican would like. You remember the headscarf ban, what wasn't published was than ban also applied to large Crucifix and Jewish Yamikas (Skullcaps).

So the law absolutely is fair. Even older Muslims families (those that have been here a few generations) know that in France secularism is absolute and they generally don't have a problem with it. Its the new immigrants who feel they are being persecuted.

USMC03, is correct that this particular ban is due because is a public heath menace.

As I said I don't have a problem with it as long as it is applied fairly across all religions and I really don't care what reasons they use in that case either.

How does it apply to religious officials?
I cant for example imagine that the Pope would be required to wear jeans and a tee shirt or face deportation.

That is more than I could say, however, I feel that it is more likely the work of a "gang" of young people who for reasons of their own have chosen to target an individual group.

ah good, that is the impression i got, as well as inferring that it was largely concentrated to a certain geographic area. but i couldn't be sure with the TV news here going crazy with it.

Yes, it is very localised, but as you say, the media tend to make a meal out of this inferring that there is some major underlying racial problem.

As far as I know, the problem has largely disappeared , as I am sure the police would now have a very good idea of who is behind it and would be watching them closely.

The ban doesn't is not universal (yet, there is a discussion about banning burkas totally in France). The headscarf law dealt specifically within public schools. Outside of public school, people can do what they wish as long as they dont infringe the rights of others.

So to answer your question, Pope Benedict could walk around France in his papal robes and all, he just couldn't attend a public school or go swimming in them.

Fair, make sense.

In Australia banks and many businesses have the right to refuse entry and service to persons wearing a balaklava, masks or full face helmet etc., burkas should be the same.

Anyone should have the right to deny persons admission to their property if that person cannot be easily identified.

Well Sarokzy is pushing for the same thing albeit for different reasons.

The French view the Burka as a symbol of the subjectation of women, and in some of the immigrant communities muslim women who dont wear it are heckled and insulted. There have even been some physical assaults and even a rape or two against women who do not submit.

This is unacceptable to French ideology of liberty, equality, and brotherhood which is the very core of the French consititution.

It should be said though that those that wear the full body suit is a very small proportion (less than 10% of French muslims), you see that far more in London than in Paris. Most of the time you see it in the open is amongst the Arab Tourists on the Champs Elysee. The headscarf is more common.

that have anything to do with recent recurring racial attacks on indian students in Victoria? i dunno how it's perceived there, or if at all it's even covered enough to form opinions, but here it's been making huge news. though no doubt sensationalised by our generally immature TV media.

The recent bashings have way more to do with a rise in young hooligans taking advantage of a soft target, (in the form of Indian students), than it does with racism......... A point which might not be covered by Indian media, is that many of these attacks, especially in the suburbs of melbourne, are undertaken by the rise of African & Pacific Islander gangs, which are causing Victoria Police a major headache, since our soft-**** socialist State Government won't give the police any resources to sort the problem out...

Victoria has the lowest per capita number of police in all States & Territories of the nation....

The State & Federal Governments, in their typical spineless and self-serving way, have taken an easy out by letting the media suggest that the bashings are race related, because then they don't have to spend more money boosting police numbers, but can instead set-up committees to involve the community's to a larger degree, (doing nothing, but making it look like they're doing something.......... the Australian Labor Party is very good at this)....

thanks for the clarification. it's what i had thought, but nobody here seems to want to believe that opinion. just another excuse to feel self-righteous rage, i guess. (probably also fueled by your annoying cricket team)

"doing nothing, but making it look like they're doing something.......... the Australian Labor Party is very good at this".

Tipical...

Labor parties trully sucks big time.."mine" is worse not even going to bet about that one.

And you feel that the liberals were not exactly the same?

They are all politicians,... they don't have to actually do anything, except waste tax payers time and money fighting among themselves when we are paying them to govern the country.

What we need in Australia is more Government, and less politics.

Good luck with that Spike......but when the people vote in wankers you get silly ****** games and bluster :)

And the majority of politicians world wide are are Class A Certified dyed in the wool ............Wankers.

We're obviously reading off the same page. :)

The only thing most politicians are actually interested in, is staying in power, and to that end, they do as little as possible in the way of government, seeing it merely as a necessary evil that they must deal with to keep their cushy jobs.

I find it very refreshing to see that the French politicians are not allowing PC stupidity to ruin the lives of the people who vote them into power.

Agreed. Currently the French have been displaying an admirable amount common sense........strange for politicians of any country.
