Rally Commemorates Attack Victims and Honors Armed Forces
By Michael E. Ruane, Washington Post Staff Writer
Organizers are expecting thousands of marchers to participate in Sunday's third annual America Supports You Freedom Walk, the Pentagon-sponsored rally that salutes the armed forces and marks the anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks.
The march is scheduled to start at 9 a.m. at the Lincoln Memorial and proceed across the Memorial Bridge to the flag-draped site where a hijacked airliner struck the Pentagon on Sept. 11, 2001.
There, near the site of the Pentagon's future Sept. 11 memorial, the Harlem Gospel Choir and the United States Army Field Band's Jazz Ambassadors will perform a 40-minute musical tribute.
When American Airlines Flight 77 crashed into the Pentagon, 184 people perished, excluding the five terrorists: 125 inside the building, and 59 passengers and crew members on the airliner.
The local march is one of more than 200 Pentagon-sponsored Freedom Walks across the country and around the world to mark the tragedy and support those in uniform, said Allison Barber, deputy assistant secretary of defense for public affairs.
Those interested in attending must register online at the Freedom Walk's Web site by 6 p.m. Friday and print a confirmation ticket. Attendees should then bring the ticket to one of three locations in Virginia and the District before Sunday to pick up march credentials. "It's a way for us to manage expectations of crowds," Barber said yesterday.
Details are available at the walk's Web site, http:www.america.supports.you.mil. Registration is free, and all participants get a free walk T-shirt. Marchers are encouraged to use Metro and arrive early.
"What's happened is that Freedom Walk is the new national tradition" marking Sept. 11 across the country, Barber said. "We expect that the Freedom Walk will continue to grow as the country's way" of remembering the victims. "We will never forget their loss," she said.
Thousands participated in the inaugural Freedom Walk on Sept. 11, 2005, which went from the Pentagon to the Mall and featured a performance by country star Clint Black. Last year's rally proceeded from the Mall to the Pentagon.
This year's Freedom Walk precedes a large antiwar march, which is scheduled for Sept. 15 and is timed to coincide with next week's much-anticipated status report to Congress by Army Gen. David H. Petraeus, the U.S. commander in Iraq.
