In a solemn ceremony in Paris, France paid tribute to its last World War I veteran, who died last week at 110, and the other 8.4 million Frenchmen who fought in the conflict. “Never again will anyone tell their grandchildren or great-grandchildren about the terrible life of the trenches,” President Nicolas Sarkozy said at the ceremony honoring Lazare Ponticelli and the rest of France’s World War I veterans at the Invalides complex that honors the country’s military and houses Napoleon’s tomb. About 1.4 million French soldiers died in the war.
