Travel can be very disorienting and their roles were obviously not defined. By switching who would be in charge of hauling their kid around they probably got carried away. If this happened at a US airport, they would have suspected the couple of being terrorists. Just because if you do anything "suspicious" (get a little lost, look tired, look like you haven't shaved in a few hours) you're a suspected terrorist.
