REVIEWING the plans of a major general who was scheduled to arrive at our Marine supply base in the Mojave Desert, I was puzzled by an entry that read: "Terrain Appreciation." As public-affairs chief, I thought that whatever went on during such a briefing might make an interesting photograph for the base newspaper. So I called the office that had originated the itinerary and asked what "terrain appreciation" was. "Oh," someone said, "that just means the general is going to play golf."
