SEVERODVINSK, Russia, June 15 (UPI) -- Russian President Dmitry Medvedev was on hand Tuesday for the official launch of the country's newest nuclear-powered submarine, the Sevmash shipyard said.

Construction of the Severodvinsk, the first Project Graney class submarine, began in 1993, the Russian news agency RIA Novosti reports.

Graney class nuclear subs are designed to launch a variety of long-range cruise missiles. They can also engage other submarines, surface warships and land-based targets.

The submarine's armament includes 24 cruise missiles, eight torpedo launchers as well as mines and anti-ship missiles.

Russia originally planned to launch the multipurpose attack submarine on May 7 to mark the 65th anniversary of the victory over Nazi Germany in 1945.

But the launch had to be delayed for more than a month due to technical problems.

The Severodvinsk is expected to enter service with the Russian Navy by late this year or early 2011.

And don't foget the Borei subs. And the Steregushchiy 'stealth' corvettes. Putin is serious about modernizing the VMF. What of those French ships they wanted to buy, the Mistrals, any news there?
