Fingers in the EU till? We'll never know
The announcement last week that auditors have refused to sign off the accounts of the EU for the 13th consecutive year passed almost without notice.
Yet this news is wholly shocking. If the accounts of the British Government were as lax, it would be a national scandal.
If anything remotely similar happened in a publicly quoted company, the directors would soon find themselves in jail.
Yet life carries sublimely on for the Commissioners of the EU - none of them showing any concern.
The problem is simple. It is impossible to account for the whereabouts of billions of pounds of taxpayers' money which is handed over to Brussels.
My guess is that much of it ends up in the hands of the mafia and various slush funds.
This scandal goes on year after year.
Yet so far the only person to have paid the price for this failure is the EU accountant Martha Andreasen who blew the whistle on the appalling state of affairs and was sacked for her pains.
Inevitably, in the topsy-turvy world of ours she recently lost her case for unfair dismissal. It is enough to make you despair.
