A COAST GUARD SHIPMATE told me of an evening when our cutter was anchored in a wildlife sanctuary off a beautiful Bahamas island.

An engineer spotted a trail of light oil on the crystal-clear water, and panic spread among our environmentally conscious crew. Afraid the propeller shaft seal might be the culprit, the engineers rushed to the stern, only to follow the trail up the port side. There they found the cook -- smiling delightedly as he offered his leftover, deep-fat-fried shrimp to the fish below.
