SHANGHAI, China - Top-ranked Roger Federer rallied to beat defending champion David Nalbandian 3-6, 6-1, 6-1 Sunday in the opening match at the Masters Cup.
Federer, who beat Nalbandian in the opener last year before losing to him in the final, served nine aces to make up for his slow start and dominate the Argentine, who had eight double faults.
The Masters Cup pits the top eight-ranked men's singles players in a round-robin competition. The top two from each four-man group qualify for the semifinals.
Federer is attempting to become the first player to win three Masters Cups and the first man to win a year-ending championship three times since Pete Sampras captured the last of his five ATP Tour World Championship titles in 1999.
The Swiss star next faces Croatia's Ivan Ljubicic, who played Andy Roddick later Sunday.
