very good book

Sir Winston S. Churchill's six volume series "The Second World War."

Probably the best history of WWll yet written. And written by a man that didn't just observe history, but actually made it!

Second choice would be "Quartered Safe out Here." The Burma campaign as seen through the eyes of a young Welsh private.

I have to agree with LocalGrizzly. Churchhill's series on WWII was nothing short of fantastic. While some people may not agree with his version of the facts ( i.e. his handling of General Wavell), I found his perspective to be very well though out (if a bit defensive at times).
I found that his analysis of the events leading up to the war (as read in "The Gathering Storm") was excellent.

And oh the vocabulary the man had!
