The family of an Iraq war veteran filed a federal suit accusing Veterans Affairs Secretary Jim Nicholson of negligence in the suicide of their son. The lawsuit says the VA is to blame for the death of Lance Cpl. Jeffrey Lucey, 23, a Marine who killed himself in June 2004 after his family says he was denied mental health care following a tour in Iraq. The lawsuit seeking unspecified damages names Nicholson and the U.S. government as defendants. VA spokesman Matt Smith said the agency has "increased its mental health care staff and created new programs and services to meet the mental health care needs" of returning veterans.
