Ex-Middle East Commander Fallon To Retire In Norfolk On Friday

Adm. William J. Fallon, who announced his retirement in March after a magazine article portrayed him as opposing President Bush over whether to go to war with Iran, will end his 41-year Navy career in a ceremony on board the aircraft carrier Theodore Roosevelt at Norfolk Naval Station on Friday.
Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates, Secretary of Defense will be the guest speaker, according to a news release.
Fallon headed U.S. Central Command, which is responsible for the military's operations in the Middle East, East Africa and Central Asia.
A naval aviator, Fallon first flew the RA-5C Vigilante in combat in Vietnam. He served in numerous other flying assignments and commanded a variety of units at sea, including Carrier Group Eight aboard the Roosevelt during Operation Desert Storm, commander of the Roosevelt Battle Group, and commander of Battle Force 6th Fleet during NATO’s Operation Deliberate Force in Bosnia.
Fallon knows the Norfolk area well, having served here in various posts including head of U.S. Fleet Forces Command and U.S. Atlantic Fleet. He earned a master's degree in international studies from Old Dominion University.
