A former Guantanamo detainee is believed to have become the Taliban's new operations officer in southern Afghanistan where he is launching attacks against British and American troops.

Adbullah Ghulam Rasoul was let out from the detention centre to the custody of the Afghan government in December 2007, which in turn released him.

According to the Associated Press, intelligence officials say he is now known as Mullah Abdullah Zakir and is working as a senior Taliban commander.

British officials have told The Times they believe Rasoul is behind a spike in road-side bombings against UK troops since spring 2008 when he was released from prison in Kabul.

Rasoul was captured in 2001 in Konduz in the car of an alleged Taliban leader carrying a gun and two Casio watches, thought to be part of bomb making equipment.

But he told a US tribunal at Guantanamo Bay that he wanted to return to Afghanistan and lead a peaceful life with his family.

A spokeswoman for the Ministry of Defence said she could not comment on "intelligence matters."

US President Barack Obama must persuade countries around the world to take in Guantanamo detainees to allow him to meet his promise to close the notorious camp within a year.
