CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. -- None of the nearly 250 service members killed when suicide bombers attacked a U.S. barracks in Lebanon 25 years ago "thought they would die on a mission for peace," a Marine Corps commandant said yesterday during a ceremony honoring the victims.
Gen. James T. Conway said the 241 killed in the Beirut car bombing, which targeted Marines on a peacekeeping force, were the first casualties of the war on terrorism. A candlelight vigil began at 6:22 a.m. - the exact time the blasts ripped through the barracks on Oct. 23, 1983.
It was the deadliest single-day death toll in Marine Corps history since the Battle of Iwo Jima and the deadliest single attack on Americans overseas since World War II, Conway said. About 1,000 people attended the ceremony.
