MARINE CORPS AIR STATION NEW RIVER, N.C.--An MV-22 Osprey aircraft has been forced to land because of an engine fire.
The military aircraft landed around 9 p.m. Tuesday at a landing zone in the Holly Ridge community near its home base at the Marine Corps Air Station New River.
Spokeswoman Maj. Shawn Haney said there were no injuries in the landing.
Authorities said the engine housing was damaged. The cause of the fire is being investigated.
The Osprey has a tilting wing and engine assembly that allows it to take off and land like a helicopter yet fly like an airplane.
The first operational squadron in the military was created at New River and deployed in September.
The aircraft was grounded early in its development after two crashes that killed 23 service members. The Osprey is intended to replace the CH-46 helicopter.
